FED: Researchers want to know why people go missing

It's National Missing Persons Week .. and researchers want to find out what makes people
take off without telling anyone.

Federal Police commissioner MICK KEELTY says 30 thousand people go missing in Australia
every year.

More than 99 per cent are eventually found .. but for every person reported missing
.. at least 12 others are affected .. possibly for years and sometimes for a lifetime.

Mr KEELTY says a research program's being funded to find out the root causes of why
people leave home without telling anyone.
